Dr Karlijn Van Wessem

Karlijn van Wessem is a trauma surgeon at the University Medical Centre Utrecht in the Netherlands. She earned her medical degree from Erasmus University Rotterdam, the Netherlands and completed her General Surgery residency in Rotterdam as well. She subsequently sub-specialised in Trauma Surgery in Newcastle, Australia, and completed an (orthopaedic) trauma fellowship at the University Medical Centre Utrecht. Since 2010, she has held the position of consultant trauma surgeon in the Department of Trauma Surgery at the University Medical Centre Utrecht. In 2013, she obtained her PhD with a dissertation titled “Clinical Treatment Strategies and Experimental Studies in Polytrauma.” She is a Fellow of the Dutch Board of Surgery, the European Board of Surgery (FEBS) and the American College of Surgeons (FACS). Dr. van Wessem has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed publications, with research focusing on polytrauma, hemorrhagic shock and resuscitation, and post-injury inflammation and its complications.
