Professor Matteo Rottoli

Professor Matteo Rottoli is a distinguished colorectal surgeon and Full Professor of Surgery in the Department of Medical and Surgical Sciences at Alma Mater Studiorum — University of Bologna, Italy. He completed his medical degree and surgical training at the University of Milan, graduating in 2004 and becoming a certified General Surgeon in 2010, with early specialization in colorectal surgery and minimally invasive techniques. 

His formative research and clinical experience include a Research Fellowship in Colorectal Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Ohio, USA, where he refined his expertise in inflammatory bowel disease and colorectal cancer surgery. Following this, he pursued advanced fellowships in laparoscopic and colorectal surgery across major UK centers including St. Thomas’ Hospital and University College London Hospital. 

Professor Rottoli is the Director of the Surgery of the Alimentary Tract at Sant’Orsola Hospital, Bologna — a leading tertiary referral center. His clinical interests encompass robotic and laparoscopic approaches for colorectal cancer, complex inflammatory bowel disease procedures (including colectomy, pouch formation, and Crohn’s disease resections), as well as functional and proctologic surgery. 

An active researcher with over 150 publications in high-impact journals, his work spans outcomes of robotic colorectal surgery, strategies in deep pelvic procedures, and large multicentre studies on colorectal cancer management and quality of surgical care. 

Professor Rottoli also contributes to surgical education and training, holds leadership roles in academic programs, and regularly presents his research at international conferences, advancing the science and practice of colorectal surgery worldwide.
