Dr Rachel Bell

Rachel is a consultant vascular surgeon at the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle upon Tyne. She is the President of the Vascular Society of Great Britain and Ireland 2022-2023 and a past President of the British Society of Endovascular Therapy and Chair of the Circulation Foundation. She qualified, with distinction in surgery, from UMDS in 1994 and did her surgical training in London and the Southeast Thames rotation. She was appointed as a consultant in 2005 at Guy’s & St. Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust. She went on to be the clinical lead for vascular surgery at St. Thomas’ Hospital followed by the Southeast London vascular network lead & the Clinical director for cardiovascular services until she moved to the Northeast in 2020. Her clinical interests include aortic aneurysm repair, open thoracoabdominal aneurysm repair, redo aortic surgery, and surgery for vascular graft infection. She is also interested in sustainable and innovative healthcare improvement and design, staff well-being and prevention of ‘burnout’.
