Convocation and Syme Oration

Convocation - Monday 10 May 2021, 4:30pm

The ASC 2021 convocation ceremony will be held at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre presided over by the RACS President and senior office bearers.  It will be followed by a welcome reception.

It is important you advise by 1 December 2020 if you are planning to convocate in 2021. Fellows eligible to convocate have the options to convocate in Melbourne (COVID restrictions permitted) or in their local States, Territories or New Zealand.

Syme Oration

The Syme Oration will be delivered by Professor Brendan Murphy, former Chief Medical Officer of Australia who became “the public face of Australia’s fight against COVID-19” during the early days of the pandemic. Dr. Murphy was also head of the Australian Health Protection Principal Committee and an adviser to the National Cabinet of Australia created to respond to the pandemic.  He vacated the role of Chief Medical Officer in June 2020 and became Secretary of the Department of Health in July 2020.

Dr. Murphy is a nephrologist by profession and was formerly President of the Australian and New Zealand Society of Nephrology,  CMO and director of nephrology at St. Vincents Health, CEO of Austin Health, a board member of Health Workforce Australia, the Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health, the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Research Institute and the Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre.
