Professor Shailesh Shrikhande

Professor Shailesh V. Shrikhande is Deputy Director of Tata Memorial Hospital and Head of Cancer Surgery. He is also Chief of GI & HPB Surgical Service. He is one of the few surgeons worldwide to have successfully performed over 1200 Whipple operations. He has conducted over 58 live Operative teaching demonstrations of pancreatic

surgeries across India especially in tier 2 and tier 3 cities in an effort to make these surgeries cheaper and more accessible to the common man in a standardized fashion. He has been invited as a visiting Professor to 8 prestigious institutions in Europe, the far east and USA. Prof. Shrikhande has been the Chief Editor of 9 educational books in Oncology, has authored 77 book chapters and has over 290 scientific publications in leading international journals. His h index is 41.


He is the Chairman of the Indian Council Medical Research (ICMR) committee for developing guidelines for management of Pancreatic and Gastric Cancer in India. He is the Past President of the Indian Chapter of IHPBA. He is also the President Elect of the Asia Pacific Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association (A-PHPBA). In recognition of his work on digestive cancer surgery in India, he was awarded Honorary Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2014 (FRCS – Ad Eundem).


In 2021, he was awarded Honorary Fellowship of American Surgical Association (ASA). He is the first Indian HPB specialist and only the second Indian ever to receive this prestigious honour in the last 141 years.
